Match a specific model
Measure at the right place
Ruffwear uses the widest rib-cage circumference. Blue-9’s chart specifies rib-cage girth about 2 inches behind the elbow. Kurgo requires both chest and neck. A number measured for one chart may need to be taken again for another.
A chart match still requires an on-dog adjustment check. The diagram illustrates the measurement concept, not an anatomical sizing standard.
Take repeatable measurements
- Stand your dog naturally. Use a flexible tape that lies flat. Avoid measuring while your dog is curled up, sitting unevenly or pulling away.
- Follow the selected model’s measurement location. Place the tape around the rib cage where that manufacturer specifies. Keep it level and avoid twisting it or compressing the dog’s body. Long fur can make readings less repeatable.
- Take a second reading. If two readings differ, enter your best repeatable value and increase the uncertainty to cover that variation. For example, readings of 26.5 and 27.5 inches suggest checking 27 inches with at least ±0.5 inch of uncertainty.
- Measure the neck when the chart calls for it. Kurgo publishes neck and chest ranges. A chest-only result is incomplete for this model. Ruffwear and Blue-9 charts used here do not publish numerical neck limits; an entered neck value cannot establish a chart match for those models.
- Check adjustment on the dog. Follow the maker’s fitting instructions. Watch how the harness sits while the dog stands and walks, and check that straps and buckles stay in the intended position. A size letter cannot verify rubbing, movement or escape resistance.
Published size ranges, with source links
All ranges below are inches from the linked manufacturer charts. The calculator converts centimetre inputs using 1 inch = 2.54 cm. Printed centimetre charts may round their boundaries differently; near a limit, check the source and physically compare fit. Size ranges include their stated endpoints, so shared boundaries can produce two candidates.

Three cases a generic size chart can miss
1. Ruffwear at a shared boundary
A 27-inch rib cage sits at the top of Front Range S (22–27) and the bottom of M (27–32). Both appear as candidates. With ±0.5-inch uncertainty, both are marked near a limit because the possible measurement crosses a boundary. Ruffwear’s guidance favors the larger option between sizes, but you should still check actual strap adjustment. Choosing M here is model-specific guidance, not a rule for all brands.
2. Kurgo chest and neck disagree
A 26-inch chest is inside Kurgo M and L chest ranges. A 13-inch neck is below M’s 16-inch minimum and L’s 18-inch minimum. Neither is a complete match. S accepts that neck but its 22-inch chest maximum is too small. The correct output is no full chart match, rather than a misleading medium recommendation. Remeasure and ask the maker whether a different model suits these proportions.
3. Blue-9 sizes overlap intentionally
At the specified measurement location, a 24.5-inch rib cage falls within S, M and M/L. M and M/L use different webbing widths: 3/4 inch and 1 inch respectively; S uses 5/8 inch. The tool keeps all candidates visible and flags any range crossed by your uncertainty. Compare adjustment and strap width on your dog rather than treating M/L as a required upgrade. A reading taken at Ruffwear’s widest point should not be reused automatically.
What the match labels mean
Within published range means every supplied, chart-supported measurement fits and its uncertainty stays inside the boundaries. Near a chart limit means your central measurement fits but its uncertainty extends beyond at least one boundary. Neck measurement needed means a Kurgo chest candidate cannot be confirmed without the neck reading. When no candidate meets the supplied measurements, the tool says so instead of assigning the closest size.
Uncertainty is a measurement-quality control. It neither stretches a manufacturer’s range nor adds an extra fitting gap. The calculation compares ranges only; it does not score comfort, pulling behavior, material durability or car safety. The Kurgo model’s name does not make this calculator a restraint-system approval. For vehicle use, consult the exact product’s current installation and use instructions.
For puppies, take a fresh measurement as they grow rather than buying an adult size that cannot currently be adjusted correctly. Compare the model’s available adjustment with today’s body shape. Use the puppy weight calculator for a separate growth estimate, not as a replacement for a harness measurement.
Common questions
Can I choose a harness from breed or weight alone?
Use the measurements required by the exact model. Dogs of similar weight can have different rib cages and necks, and size letters are not consistent across brands.
Why are several sizes shown?
Some manufacturer ranges overlap. Every candidate that meets the supplied measurements is shown. Compare adjustment, strap width and the model’s own instructions rather than assuming one unique answer.
Should I add two fingers to the tape measurement?
Do not add an invented numerical allowance to a manufacturer chart. Measure at the specified location, then follow that model’s instructions for checking looseness and adjustment once the harness is on.

Practical decision guide · Reviewed October 5, 2026
From chart candidates to a repeatable fit check
A published range narrows the shortlist. Body proportions, strap placement, webbing width and adjustment still need to be checked on the dog with the exact model’s instructions.
Measurement uncertainty can change the decision
For Ruffwear Front Range, a repeatable 26.8-inch girth is inside S (22–27). With ±0.1 inch uncertainty, that interval stays inside S. With ±0.5 inch, it reaches 27.3 inches, crossing the upper limit, so the tool flags S near a chart boundary. M is not automatically added: the central 26.8-inch value is below M’s 27-inch minimum.
This distinction prevents a measurement error band from silently expanding published size ranges. If the interval crosses a boundary, remeasure and compare adjustment using the manufacturer’s guidance. The uncertainty control describes confidence in your tape reading, not extra strap length or a comfort allowance.
Check a missing neck measurement before treating a result as complete
For Kurgo, a 26-inch chest can produce M and L chest candidates. With the neck left blank, they remain incomplete. Entering a 17-inch neck makes M a chart match but excludes L because L begins at 18 inches. Entering a 19-inch neck allows both M and L; that overlap requires a physical adjustment comparison rather than an invented ranking.
For Ruffwear and Blue-9, the charts used here have no published numerical neck range. An entered neck value is not evaluated for those models. This does not mean neck fit is unimportant; it means the source does not provide a numerical rule this calculator can certify.
Use the model’s instructions for the fitting trial
| Check | Observe on the dog | If unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustment | Whether straps can reach the intended position | Compare another candidate or ask the maker |
| Strap placement | Position relative to front legs while standing and walking | Check model-specific adjustment instructions |
| Body proportions | Chest panel and neck opening with the full harness on | Consider a different model, not just a different letter |
| Webbing width | The actual strap width for the chosen size | Compare published model and size specifications |
Ruffwear publishes a Front Range adjustment guide. Consult the instructions for the selected model rather than applying its strap arrangement to every harness. A chart match cannot assess rubbing, movement or escape resistance from circumference alone.
Keep a measurement record for growing or changing dogs
Record the date, exact model, unit, measurement location, chest reading, any required neck reading and the range of repeat measurements. If you change brands, retake the girth at that model’s specified location rather than assuming the earlier value is equivalent.
Remeasure a growing puppy and check the currently adjustable fit. An adult-weight forecast does not tell you the future neck or rib-cage circumference. Do not choose an adult size that cannot be fitted today solely to avoid a later purchase. The puppy tool supports broad planning, while this tool uses actual current measurements.
Resolve an overlap or no-match result
For overlap, compare actual adjustment and the maker’s size guidance. Blue-9 S, M and M/L can overlap at a 24.5-inch rib-cage reading, with different webbing widths. Keep all three possibilities until the fitting requirements narrow them. For no match, check units, location, tape repeatability and model before searching another size.
If chest and neck require incompatible sizes, provide both measurements to the maker and ask about a different model. Do not omit the failing measurement to obtain a positive result. For car use, separately follow the exact product’s transport and installation instructions; this sizing tool does not rate the restraint system.
