Measure the landing you will actually use

Measure vertically to the supported end of the ramp, not the roof, bumper trim or advertised vehicle ground clearance. A rear cargo sill and a side-door opening can have different heights. Park on level ground for the initial measurement, then check the setup again at the places you normally unload.

Compare a real 87 inch ramp with your height

PetSafe publishes a 47–87 inch length range and 20 inch overall width for its Happy Ride Extra Long Telescoping ramp. At full 87 inch extension, a 28 inch rise produces an angle of about 18.8 degrees and needs about 82.4 inches of horizontal space. At a 32 inch rise, the angle becomes about 21.6 degrees. These are calculated dimensions, not a test of traction or your dog’s ability to use it.

Check the connection, storage and clear walking width

Confirm that the top lip sits on a stable surface and that the manufacturer permits that placement. A side door can limit clearance even when the ramp length fits. Overall width includes edges; ask for the clear tread width if it is not published. The same PetSafe ramp stores at 47 inches long, so measure the space where it will travel.

When the driveway is too short

For a 28 inch rise and only 60 inches of clear floor run, a straight ramp would have a slope of about 25.0 degrees. Buying a longer ramp does not create more floor space. Consider a lower supported entry point or another loading arrangement instead of blocking a road or forcing a poor fit.

How these examples were calculated

Ramp length = landing height ÷ sin(angle). Horizontal floor run = landing height ÷ tan(angle). For an existing ramp, angle = arcsin(height ÷ ramp length). Values are rounded to one decimal place. The calculation assumes a straight ramp on level ground with a supported top; curved ramps and uneven ground need a separate measurement.
